Using the Keyword Research Tool is one of the first steps to take when choosing a blog topic to blog about.
Your blogging journey begins with the right topic selection, which happens to be one of the hardest parts of building a successful blog. Don’t make the mistake of choosing the wrong topic…
First, you need to avoid these common mistakes people make when starting an online business and when it comes to choosing a topic to write a blog about, avoid these 4 things:
- Don’t pick a subject just because you see others writing about it. (like you know when bead making was in vogue in Nigeria everyone started doing it, when makeup stuff was in vogue everyone just jumped into it. Smart bloggers don’t do that).
- Avoid writing about something you’re not passionate about.
- Don’t base a blog on a topic you know little about or have minimal practical experience in.
- Be careful not to write about too diverse a range of subjects, your blog must have a focus.
If you don’t know what you want to blog about, don’t go ahead to create a blog (in the next lesson).
If you’re not sure of what you’ll be blogging about, don’t just choose a name for your blog.
If you’re passionate about a topic and you feel this makes you add value to people, solve people’s problem, then you’ll be known for that.
Thankfully, this is what this article is all about.
So What Should You Blog About?
To be honest, there are enough topics to blog about. But the questions is – are they profitable? How do you know if you’re choosing a promising topic?
You need to understand what I call the profitable topics/niches
There are 5 broad profitable topics/niches which hundreds of people can blog about and still be profitable.
- Health & Fitness
- Career & Self-improvement
Trust me, just about ANYTHING that falls into these 5 broad topics/niches are great promising topics to blog about.
But just jumping into any of these without having a perfect understanding of KEYWORDS to be used will be a huge mistake.
For example, if I own dogs and know a lot about dogs and decided to blog about “dogs” it automatically falls into interests right?
Look at it from the following search results on Google, enough people are searching for dogs, right?
890 million search results. People are searching for it. But which KEYWORDS/PHRASE will you as a blogger use to create content in this niche so as to get traffic.
REMEMBER: You want to blog about not just what you know but what people are searching for, for what they need.
So you must understand what is called KEYWORD RESEARCH and how to use the Keyword research tool.
I did not just pick “dogs”,
- I know people are searching for it.
- I know other things related to dogs that people are searching for and the keywords that they use in searching for it.
How? I know you’re going to ask.
I Used a Keyword Research Tool For Research
This tool called the Google Keyword Planner. It helps you go behind search engines and see what people are searching for and how many people are searching for those things.
Straight to the point – This tool helps you INVESTIGATE the topic you want to be blogging about for more suggestions, to see if it’s got potential for traffic.
Why Research Before Choosing Your Topic?
The idea behind performing a research is to; find the keywords and other relevant ideas that people are using as search queries so as to get an idea of what to include in your contents.
Keywords here are the EXACT words that people type on search engines like google to search for information or to make a purchase.
So if you research before choosing a topic, you will be taking the right step and you wont waste precious time on what’s not promising.
For example: When you type these two set of keywords: “Interview questions” and also “Job interview questions” in the KeywordPlanner tool, both gives an entirely different picture in terms of traffic.
I will demonstrate what I mean, but first what is Google Keyword Planner?
What is Google Keyword Planner tool?
Google Keyword tool is an official product from Google, which gives you a traffic estimation of your target Keywords and also help in finding more relevant and related Keywords for your niche.
Few Important things to know:
- You need to have a Google Adwords account to use Google Keyword Planner tool. It’s free, and you don’t need to spend any money to use this tool. You can simply create an Adwords tool and start using it.
- This tool is created to target Adwords advertisers, but it still gives a great deal of information when it comes to finding the right keyword and search volume estimates for your blog and articles.
- The higher the traffic estimation, the higher the potential for traffic (though not always). Keyword with1k search estimates upward are okay
Beginners Guide to Using Google KeyWordPlanner
Then Sign In – You obviously need a Google (Gmail) account.
Note: This gmail account will be what you’ll use to always access the keyword planner tool.
To access the keyword planner tool, you must set up your google adword account. To do that, SIGN IN
Setting Up your Google Adwords Account
The Following pictures put’s you through setting up your Google Adwords account, as this will enable you use the Google Keyword Planner Tool.
Once signed you’ll get a welcome to Adwords message.
Next, You need to create an Ad campaign. You just have to create it, but you won’t use it. Creating it helps you trick Google that you want to create an advert.
Next on the same page, enter one or two keywords and separate with commas.
The next part is Payment information. DON’T WORRY, You won’t pay a dime.
And finally, you’re good to go. But you have to go DEACTIVATE/REMOVE this ad campaign you just created so that the funds in your ATM card don’t get deducted.
You also get a welcome message in you email.
Once you click “Go to your account”, you’ll land on the page below with the dialogue box. Click ‘Cancel”.
Once you click cancel, you’ll land on this page below. And the last thing to do is to remove the ad campaign.

- Click ‘All Ads’
- Tick the box in front of the ‘Campaign #1’
- Go to ‘Edit’, it gives you a drop down. Click the ‘Remove’
- You get a prompt message asking if you want to permanently remove the campaign. Click OK and you’re good to go!
And that’s it, that’s how to create or setup your Google Adwords account.
Once you’re through with setting up your Google Adword account, you’re set to explore the power of the Keyword Planner Tool.
Scroll up to the menu tabs, Click on the Spanner Icon then Keyword Planner
With Google’s new interface, click the 3-dot drop down and you’ll find the Keyword Planner. Click on it and it will open in a new tab.
On the next page, you can now start Researching what people are typing into google search engine, how many people are searching for that information, and which keyword or key phrase exactly are they typing into Google Search.
NOTE: You’ll get a read bar above your browser, telling you your account was suspended because of suspicious payment. IGNORE IT.
Carry on with your research.
For me, I wanted to know how many people were searching for Interview questions, I carried out the search, and about 10,000 people are searching for this.
For now the 2 parameters you want to focus on in the picture above is Your Search terms which I boxed and the Average monthly search which I also boxed.
- The search terms are what EXACTLY people are typing into Google to search.
- The average monthly search is the estimated number of people searching using the keyword(s)
Between 1k to 10k people are searching using “Interview questions”
Between 100 to 1k people are searching using “interview questions and answers”
Between 100 to 1k people are searching using “job interview questions”
If you are going to get a higher chance of receiving free traffic from google? Which keyword will you rather write your blog post around? It’s definitely the first because so many people are searching with the keywords/phrase “interview questions”
**So, huge volume of search on a particular keyword or set of keyword shows that keyword has potential for traffic.
With this information, Guess what I did, I wrote an article about Interview questions in Nigeria. (Since about 10,000 people are searching for it, then that will mean traffic to oasdom.com, FREE OF CHARGE.

Quickly go to google, search “Interview questions in Nigeria”, You’ll see oasdom’s posts on the first page and first 4 results of google search results.
Thousands of people searching for this information now visit Oasdom through that post alone, not to talk of other traffic giving posts.
Go ahead, do the search and you’ll find our post : Top 63 most asked interview questions in in Nigeria and answers that work.
Back to Your RESEARCH,
LIKE I SAID the other time, if I focus my article on “interview questions” I have a upper hand than if I focus my article on “job interview question”. The average monthly search result says it all.
More idea results from the image are:
“job interview questions and answers” (100 to 1k monthly searches)
“interview preparation” (10 to 100 monthly searches)
“common interview questions” (100 to 1k monthly searches)
“interview answers” (10 to 100 monthly searches)
“job interview” (100 to 1k monthly searches)
“interview skills” (10 – 100 monthly searches)
Search keywords/phrases in the 10 – 100 average monthly searches is not so promising. I wouldn’t write any post around such keywords. Between 100 to 1k, 1k to 10k or 10k to 100k is okay.

So try out keywords and phrases in the niche you’ve decided to blog in, and Google will suggest other relevant keywords that people are searching for and the estimation of people searching using those keywords.
With that you get an insight into what to blog about and not just jumping into choosing a topic. You’ll write about a topic that you know people are searching for!
- By doing a Keyword search, you will be able to find keywords to drive targeted traffic, more revenue and more niche traffic.
- It is a smart way to optimize your content for people who are searching it
Back to the DOG example
If I write my blog posts focusing on “Dog breeds”, the potential for traffic is high and also there are other suggested relevant keywords with reasonable average monthly searches.
But if I write my blog posts focusing on “Dog business in Nigeria”, I don’t stand a better chance. I tried “dog business in Nigeria” as my search query.
Though “Dog business in Nigeria” has enough search results, 2.7million as seen below, it’s not so promising – enough people are not using the keywords.
But behind the scene, here’s the reality..
So, it’s “dogs for sale in Nigeria that’s promising not “dog business in Nigeria”.
So when you want to write any blog post, do your keyword research and know the keywords or phrase you want to focus on.
I’m sure you get it to this point right? Also, in choosing your blog topic, you should take into consideration your audience.
Know Your Target Audience
No blog has an audience of “everybody.” You want to identify which specific groups of people are the most likely to be interested in your content.
This will help you create and then design all your marketing towards them. You need to take into consideration:
- Demographics – age, gender, income level, profession and so on
- Psychographics – personality, preferences, etc.
- Behavior – hobbies, media consumption and other likes and dislikes
Once you’ve established the types of people you think will be interested in reading your blog, you need to present them specific topics they want to read about.
Choosing a Blog Topic Which Will Last
Will you have enough material to go the distance with your blog?
Is your topic going to be interesting and relevant for a long time in the future? Blog success doesn’t happen overnight. You’ll need to build up a large volume of material.
Don’t pick any topic which is terribly time sensitive. You’ll want your archive of older posts to be interesting to future readers. This doesn’t mean you can’t write about current events, but always keep evergreen content in mind.
For example oasdom.com has evergreen contents one of which is Top 63 most asked interview questions and best answers. New visitors will always find it helpful year after year.
If you focus on creating evergreen contents too, you’ll be doing yourself enough good as this will have a long term effect on your blog traffic.
What If You Have No Ideas At All?
For people who have no idea what to blog about I tell them to write down a list of their hobbies, passions, experiences, education and skills in all areas of life and then take that list and derive blog topics.
In almost all cases it’s easier to start a blog from something you have an interest in, so I try and steer people in that direction rather than get too caught up in the potential to make money.
There is no such thing as failure if you actually put something out there and learn from the experience and sometimes the only way to really know whether a topic has potential is to test it on a real live blog.
The truth is, no one can tell you what to blog about, it’s up to you to decide. Just don’t stay suspended in limbo due to decision-paralysis. Nothing will feel 100% right until you actually start doing it.
